From Island to Island

This project through multiple channels will focus on the concept of “island” as interpreted through the work of artists connected to islands in a variety of ways and from a variety of backgrounds.

Whereas one initial reaction to living on an island is to cultivate an individual, isolated, closed persona, further events might lead to a tendency to seek a connection - a coalescence of similarly-situated individuals - or to react by moving or immigrating to search for connections, groups, or communities.

This is how a tribal community can start to form in a new land, and social subjectivity might take shape. Consequently, From Island to Island will look at the flowing, moving, transport, and immigration of peoples, and the route of travel and voyage that connects island to island.

Within this main theme of From Island to Island, artists connected to Taiwan will be asked to consider similarities and differences between Governors Island and Taiwan as an island, and in particular Taiwan’s Green Island. [Green Island is a small island about 20 miles off the eastern coast of Taiwan. It is the site of a prison formerly used to incarcerate political prisoners after WWII when Chiang Kai-Shek was President of Taiwan.

The artists will draw directly on the historical background of Governors Island or turn Governors Island’s topography to a three dimensional mapping installation, or create video pieces that employ storytelling or photography to take the site of the people, land and life of the island. All this can be documented or animated.

From Island to Island is conceived in two complementary aspects. First, there will be a core group of artists selected for an artist residency program on Governors Island, staffing the house from May to October, creating site-specific art, and maintaining studios there.

2023 New Years Greeting to all friends

Dear Friends, Thank you for your support in the past, and TAAC is appreciative of your continuing support. We are glad and grateful that we could work with many very talented artists this year. In 2022, we orchestrated thematic people-centered (Urban Caravan) and land/environmental (Urban Reverence/Divergence) projects in three exhibitions -Urban Tribes series II and III - with multiple conjunction programs: at Brooklyn's Pfizer building, at the IW gallery and at the Valerie Goodman Gallery in Manhattan. Also we are happy to have supported performance artist Chin-Chih Yang for his induction into NYFA's Hall of Fame. To benefit artists and the community, we arranged at the Voelker Orth Museum "Walking in the Cosmos: Artists interpreting Urban Reverence" with artist talks, a workshop, a panel discussion, and special tours for young people and community groups. TAAC was also able to support some individual artists and provide a platform to promote others. Look for the 2023 cross-disciplinary "NYC Art Bridge" program in which psychiatrists and professional artists will help us promote mental wellness. We are also glad to pre-announce that TAAC will be participating in the organizational residency at Governors Island with a multiethnic residency and various open houses and exhibition programs.

Rethinking culture and art history, the relationship between humans, land, and the myth of universe operation has been recently and swiftly transformed into a chaotic hymn or hysterical tone. In the passage of simple diurnal imagery, nature held rich mythologies of our environment to be reverenced. Divergence from a perceived golden age to a crisis age in society and politics has impacted genres in culture and art. The centrifugal tendency in the transition from the rural village to the urban is the loss of cultural rituals and myths, the need to adapt to the new language and the loss of innocence. Art creators are able to mediate and textualize new connections to the threat to culture and most particularly its antecedents. The series of Urban Tribes projects started in 2018 to examine from an art perspective the phenomenon of migrants forming an international cross-cultural "urban tribe" – one of the genres at the turn of the 21st century. The discourse thus moves to valuing human nature, preserving multiple cultures, renewing the environment, and honoring the new multi-faceted unity. Potential political, economic, and cultural crises can be averted only by an emphasis on the diversity of life that promotes interactive relationships. Artists in this contemporary expression might inscribe the ambivalences and complexities of existential agon, of voice, of the affective root, or cultural difference. The artwork was chosen by the curatorial team of Luchia Meihua Lee (Taiwanese American Arts Council), Fangling Tseng (Kaohsiung Museum), Faustino Quintanilla (QCC Art Gallery), and Amy Winter (GTM). This collaborative project will be on display at three sites: the Godwin-Ternbach Museum; the Queensborough Community College Art Gallery in Queens; and El Museo de Los Sures in Brooklyn, with a total of 24 Taiwanese and New York-based artists.

Rewoven celebrates concept and relentlessly confronts the requisites of fiber art. The seven artists in this exhibit all live and work in New York City. They regenerate a parameter of relationship between individual and society, from reviewing the over developed land, symbolically mapping urban public transportation, and exposing endless industrial exhaust hiding under shiny metallic ribbons cut from cans. In Rewoven, the literary or journalistic consideration has been abandoned. Powerful questions adumbrate a melting iceberg indicative of dangerous water crisis, and a sarcastic golf club dialogue with personal history revels in a whirlpool of money windfalls. Recuperating from these disasters, we end up in retreat in a womb-like chair. These views expand connectivity and reach globally. We chafe at the restrictions sometimes reinforced. Gala evening celebrates Taiwanese art and culture

A wide array of Taiwanese art and culture was recently on display at the Taiwanese American Arts Council’s third annual gala. Held at the Taiwan Center, just across the street from Flushing Town Hall, the gala featured music, dance, food, art and prominent cultural and political figures. The gala was coordinated by Luchia Meihua Lee, TAAC’s executive director.

TAAC has the mission of promoting and publicizing Taiwanese-American art, as well as encouraging dialogue on artistic issues. Established in 2014, the organization supports the Queens Museum Taiwanese Endowment Fund, brings Taiwanese artists to the U.S. to exhibit and perform, and works cooperatively with colleagues around the country to broaden the audience for Taiwanese art and culture.

As guests entered the lobby, they were able to look over the work of 15 artists whose works were up for auction and listen to banjo music performed by Lorin Roser. Attendees were then invited from the lobby to the main room, where the gala’s co-chairs, Dr. Lung Fong Chen, Thomas Chen and community leader Patrick Huang, delivered the opening speeches.

“So much has happened in the last three years,” said Chen. “with everybody’s friendship, communication and asking what TAAC is for.” He thanked Commissioner of New York Cultural Affairs Tom Finkelpearl, who was the event’s keynote speaker.

After the speeches, an assortment of Taiwanese dishes were offered to attendees, and entertainment was provided by several performance artists. Music and dance from Joy Chi Wang, Chia Chun Jessica Hu and Claire Chien-Lun Lee focused on Asian women immigrating to the United States. Chi Wang performed modern piano works and played music on several traditional musical instruments.

Former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman and curent Borough President Melinda Katz were two of many local representatives present at the gala. “We are a borough of great culture, of great art,” said Katz. “The council does such a wonderful job in making sure that the artists, who just want to do the artwork of their home country, have a place to go, a place to advocate for them, and a place to learn.”

Featured artists included ChinChin Yang, who displayed a piece called “Pollution Solution,” which was made up of strips of aluminum cans to create a net and backed by LED lights. He writes, “Unfortunately, pollution has become an integral part of our lives. We ourselves are the only ones who may be able to come up with a collective solution to this dilemma.”

Artist Rosalie Yu, whose work seeks to identify and recreate the human connections that are often overlooked in our daily lives, displayed a piece called “Embrace in Progress, #4, Father,” composed of powder and sandstone. Other artists on display included Hung Yi, Eric C. Chiang, Tzu Huan, Tang Wei Hsu and Ming-Jer Kuo.

Among the attendees were Yeou-Cheng Ma, her husband Michael Dadap and artist Zhang Hongtu. Ma, the sister of YoYo Ma, is an accomplished Queens-based violinist. She and her husband run the Children’s Orchestra Society. Hongtu, a pioneer in Contemporary Chinese art, was recently featured at the Queens Museum with his ping- pong table cut out with the head of Chairman Mao Zedong.

TAAC’s Lee shared her reactions to the evening. “I was touched to see many friends from New York art circles that were able to attend. The presence of long-term friend of TAAC Tom Finkelpearl was particularly meaningful to me speaking about one of his favorite themes, diversity in the arts.

“It was delightful to view how the gala’s art work brought a welcome change in the lobby of Taiwan Center, thanks to the dedicated efforts of many people, most of them volunteers,” she said. “The evening was highly successful. I hope TAAC will grow year after year and contribute to our New York art world.”

The artworks which were displayed in the gala lobby are also pictured in a digital booklet that is available at taac-us.org online. They will be available until end of the year.

In this digital series, 'Atlas', I photographed dilapidated advertisement boards on NYC subway platforms. During the transition period, before a new advertisement is placed over the old, the layered remains of previous posters create an imaginary landscape. I transfer these photographs into 3D software, resulting in a virtual three-dimensional topographic model, attempting to realize the passing of time on this landscape. Each landscape documents a specific site in the fictional world of advertising; each landmark perpetually manipulated and physically eroded by anonymous commuters.
