The New York Hall of Science and the Taiwanese American Arts Council joined together to open a new art exhibition called The Moment on Sunday, Aug. 9.
The exhibition displays the work of 14 artists who use media to explore the idea of “The Moment.” It was curated by C.J. Yeh and Luchia Meihua Lee.
Artists included in the exhibition are all from a Taiwanese background. They are Chin Pao Chen, Yu-Ting Feng, Chemin Hsiao, Scottie Huang, Shih Chieh Huang, Ming Jer Kuo, Daniel Lee, HsiangLu Meng, Hao Ni, Mennie Hsiu-Ying Shen, Amy ChingChun Wen, Chin Chih Yang, C.J. Yeh and Roslie Yu.
The concept of the exhibit is to investigate the play of the virtual and the real, inward and outward, or a view of self in the outside environment. Photography, painting, interactive media, video, animation, poetry and 3D body scanning are used by these artists to comment about this intersection of the inner mind and the outside environment.

The artwork covered themes like culture shock.
“This is only the first event in this whole sequence of events that we call ‘The Moment,’” said Yeh. “We plan to have this at all different locations, but we’re starting here in the Hall of Science, so because of the location, we really want to put together something that’s meaningful for the visitors. Our main theme for this show right here, we have 14 artists and 15 pieces, and we have a wide-range of media, you see the traditional painting, isolation and the interactive parts, but the core theme is the same. It’s a clash between culture and technology.”
The art work featured in the exhibit contains interactive pieces, so visitors can have a clear understanding of how big of a role technology plays in human nature. The first piece that was introduced called “Lettergraphy” gave a unique perspective on the beauty of handwriting a letter. The artist of the piece, Shen, spoke briefly about why she chose to do her project on this topic.
“It’s a project about handwriting letters and I was trying to capture the moment of handwriting a letter because I felt like a letter especially in the digital age, because now we use e-mail, text messages and everything,” said Shen. “You only hand-write something when it’s someone special or like a special moment, but I felt like we never really noticed the moment of writing and you’re never aware of it.”
She continued by explaining how she went about her process. The sensor located within the piece captures the visitor’s strokes and movements when they interact with the artwork, capturing the entire handwriting process. Once the visitor writes a letter and places it in the mailbox located above the artwork, Shen will print out the letter onto a unique postcard surface and mail it back to you, so that you can recreate the moment and memory of the letter that was written.
One piece called the “Portrait of a Dandelion” by Huang is another interactive piece that uses fractal and recursive algorithms to copy the morphology of a dandelion flower. It combines generative animation and physiological measurements to grasp the visitor’s facial expressions and gathers information about the visitor’s smile as a nutrient for a virtual dandelion growing and that’s only the half of it.
Another one of the art works featured in this exhibit is not an interactive piece, instead it focuses on relaying a message. The piece is called “Parts of a Whole” by Meng and it’s motivated by the differences and similarities between people and the tension between them. When one looks at the piece from afar, the structure appears to be a collection of buttons. When one zooms in on the piece, the buttons become clear and the light illuminating from the back shows the distinctive faces from passport photos displayed on the buttons. The light represents the energy emitting from each individual’s core and their desire to stand out.
“At first I came here and I felt like okay the culture is so different and everybody here is so different and then after a while when I got used to this culture, my experience here actually changed,” Meng said as she explained where her inspiration for “Parts of a Whole” came from. “Now I see if we are different people and [have] different cultures, we share different beliefs, but still we have so many similarities that [are] shared, so this work conveys ideas like when you see it from a far, you see tiny dots, but you need to get close enough, then you see each button has different faces inside it, there are about 7,000 buttons and they are passport photos I found online.”
“The Moment” doesn’t just focus on technology and human nature, but it also focuses on the norms of what beauty means. “Perfect 10” by the curator Yeh does just that. The interactive commentary is based on the fashion among young women in Asia to have plastic surgery. In South Korea, one in five women have gone under a knife to mimic the ideal Western appearance. While this focuses on South Korean women, it also hits home because physical appearance is of much importance especially within the five boroughs. “Perfect 10” is a catalog of facial features from 30 famous Asian women and they can be rearranged or changed into 27,000 different combinations by shouting into the microphone provided with the artwork.
The exhibit will be on view from Aug. 9 through Sept. 13. Admission to the exhibit is free with general museum admission.

This month, I attended a media preview for the latest exhibition "The Moment" put together by The New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) and the Taiwanese American Arts Council. The temporary exhibition will display works by 14 Taiwanese artists using various media to explore the idea of “the moment” and technology.
During the preview I had a chance to meet with some of the artist and members of Taiwanese American Arts Council to learn more about the idea behind "The Moment" exhibition
The concept of The Moment is to investigate the play of the virtual and the real, inward and outward, or a view of self in the outside environment. The 14 artists in the exhibition comment upon this intersection of the inner mind and the outside environment using a variety of media, including photography, painting, interactive media, video, animation, poetry and even 3D body scanning
Each artist shared a bit about their background and what their artwork represented. While they all had in common the theme of "The Moment", how they expressed it was unique to them and the medium they used in their artwork.
